Game Variations (Send Us Your Own!)

Below are some of our favorite alternative variations to play BagTag while out on the course. If you have your own way of playing let us know and we’ll add it to the website!

BagTag Lite:

Rules: This version’s primary goal is to get players to familiarize themselves with the game in a low pressure environment. Read through the cards and see which ones you like. There’s no pressure to use them all, you are just getting to know the game. Once you have picked a few and want to use them, pull them out at a hole and get to winning. After winning a card at a hole, simply hang it from your bag. You can choose before you start if the cards will remain in play once they have been won or be done for the remainder of the round. At the end of the round see who has the lowest score and they are your BagTag Champion!

Best for: Groups that have never played BagTag before, or want to pick it up mid round.

BagTag Blanks:

Rules: In this version of the game, ignore what is printed on the cards. You will be competing in one of three contests on every hole. On par 3s, you’re playing closest to the pin. On par 4s, you’re playing for the Longest Drive. On Par 5s, you’re playing First on the Green. When a player wins a hole, grab any BagTag in your set and clip it onto the winner’s bag. Refer to the rules on the

Best for: Groups that have never played before or groups that want to compete on every single hole.

BagTag Scramble:

Rules: BagTag Golf can easily be played during a scramble. Play the scramble as usual, but compete for BagTags separately amongst your group. For example, on the longest drive card, all 4 players will hit their drive. Whoever hits the longest drive will earn the card and clip it to their bag. This adds an element of competition to your otherwise team based round. This also offers an easy way to keep track of who is contributing the most shots to the scramble. The Longest Putt card will be awarded when only one player from the group makes a putt on a certain hole. First on the Green card will be awarded when only one player from the group hits a certain shot onto the green.

Best for: Groups playing in a scramble style round.

BagTag 2v2:

Rules: In a group of four, play BagTag in a 2 vs 2 fashion. You and your partner will be competing against the other group of two for cards to hang on one of your bags. For example, on the longest drive, each player will hit their drive. The player with the longest drive earns that card for your team. You and your teammate form one chain of cards together. Scoring is the same as standard BagTag golf.

Best for: Groups of 4 or groups playing Best Ball.

BagTag Open Season:

Rules: In this version, start by playing as you would in any other round of BagTag. Once a card is won by a golfer, it is not out of play for the rest of the round. The bottom card on every player’s chain is still in play on holes it could be competed for. For example, if player one  wins the longest drive card on hole one, it would be back in play on hole 2 for the entire group (assuming hole 2 isn’t a par three). It is back in play in addition to any other card getting introduced on the second hole. Let’s say the longest putt card is introduced on the second hole, and player two has both the longest drive and the longest putt on the hole. Player two would then steal the longest drive card from player one, and then clip the Longest putt card to the bottom of their chain, winning two points on one hole. On the third hole only the longest putt card would be in play because the longest drive card is not on the bottom of player two’s chain. Once the longest putt is stolen back by a different player, it would “unlock” the longest drive card to be able to be stolen on the following hole.

Best for: Groups that have played BagTag multiple times.

BagTag Rolling Negatives:

Rules: Play BagTag golf the standard way but the negative cards are always in play. For example, every time the out of bounds card is lost, that player takes the card from the previous loser’s chain and adds it to theirs. Only the person with the card at the end of the game gets the +1 point. A similar variation would be every time you earn a negative card you get +1 Points, and whoever ends up with the card gets an additional +2 points at the end of the round.

Best for: Groups with a lot of lost balls and three putts.

BagTag Drink Roulette:

Rules: This variation takes some planning and is played in a way similar to the “drink up” version of BagTag. Each card is assigned a designated drink. The winner of the good cards gets to give out the drink assigned to that card to a player of their choosing. For bad cards, the loser takes the assigned drink themselves. Assigning the drinks can be done with a randomized wheel before or during the round, or can be planned out depending on what's in your cooler.  Ideas of different drinks could be certain brands of beers for certain cards, different shots for different cards, shotguns for certain cards, or even water for designated cards. If you want to raise the stakes, make one card’s designated drink extra painful. For extra drinks, the bad cards keep rolling in a fashion similar to the “Rolling Negatives” variation of BagTag.

Best for: Groups that want to drink.

BagTag Free For All:

Rules: Any card can be played for or stolen at any time. Every hole, someone in the group decides to either pull a new card out of the bag to put in play, or choose a card from someone else's chain to put up and try to steal. You could even play for multiple cards each hole. Don’t be afraid to add your own rules to make it unique to your group.

Best for: Groups that have played multiple times, or if the pace of play is already slow.
